Our Very Own HOUSE Episode

Well, life is finally getting back, somewhat, to normal. For those of you who had been following my live facebook feed over the past couple of weeks, you know what was going on. Or at least knew pretty much as much as we did. It all started when Deo had returned from Colorado. He was there for work and since it was his last time going up there, he though he would make the drive to see what it was like. He brought a friend with him to help on the drive and keep him company. It was about a 13 hour drive, and after getting home he said he would "never do that again."
He returned on a Friday, slept basically through Saturday and woke up to go to the UA Homecoming game. He was still exhausted, but we trucked through the first half until we decided being up by 40 points was enough to call it quits for the day. Basically, Deo came home and crashed again until the night. He started to feel like he was coming down with a cold, or maybe just exhaustion from the quick drive to and from CO. Sunday morning he woke up in a pool of sweat. He was running a fever and looked hellish. I, for sure, thought it was the flu, since he was the only one of us who didn't get a flu shot. I was scared it was H1N1, so the baby and I stayed away. Deo was basically quarantined to our room and I even slept out in the family room on a air mattress. On Monday, Deo went to our PCP since he was still running a fever. By that time, the whites of his started turning yellow. The doctor thought it sounded like the flu, but was worried about his eyes, so prescribed tamaflu and ordered some blood work. "See me on Thursday," he said, "and we'll go over your blood work." Well, we didn't make it until Thursday. On Wednesday, Deo was still running a fever and the tamaflu wasn't helping at all. He said he felt like his body was shutting down. At that point, we decided to just go into the ER and get this thing figured out.
This is pretty much when our HOUSE episode started. They admitted him from the ER and basically started playing the rule out game. Flu test - negative. H1N1 - negative. Chest x-ray - negative. MRI - negative. They finally admitted him into Critical Care late that night, hooked him up to some general antibiotics, and we waited. And waited, and waited, and waited. Basically, this is how a hospital works. You wait a day to see the doctor. The doctor orders a test, which you have to wait until the next day to do because the doctor came so late in the day. You get the test, and then have to wait another day for the doctor to come in again and go over the results. And so on and so on until they find something. We did for a whole 7 days in the hospital. Poor Deo saw a GI doctor, a Infectious Disease doctor, and the floor doctor on rotation.
Basically, it was found that Deo contracted Cytomegalovirus, or CMV for short. I still don't really know what this is, but I guess it is a viral form of herpes (I know, sounds like an STD gone wrong but not quite). You can contract it various ways, but basically it can come from (wait for it...)someone who uses the restroom and not washing their hands. Ya...sickening! Basically, it is something that most people, at some point in their life will contract but our own immune systems take care of it. For some reason (maybe the traveling, driving, tiredness, etc.) Deo's immune system was suppressed enough where it couldn't fight off the CMV and so it caused an infection in his liver, which caused an inflamed bile duct, which was causing bile back up into his body, which was causing the fever, jaundice, and sharp pains in his back and abdomen. PHEW.
Deo was finally released from the hospital last Tuesday. He is getting better every day and is starting to get his energy back. He's tired, but for the most part, getting right back on track. We had such an outpouring of kindness from family and friends and we really appreciate that. I know Deo said that it helped him immensely, especially when he was in Critical Care without knowing why. And it helped me get through knowing I had support. To say the least, I am very happy that he is OK and can have my husband and Trey's dad around again. You go through an array of emotions going through something like this, so I'm just now processing through all those. It is, however, a great transition into Thanksgiving, truly being thankful for our health and the health of all those around us. I'm thankful for my husband and am looking forward to our life together; and hopefully no more scares like this for a while!

Obsessed Much?
Trey has his first real obsession (other than my boobs of course)...the dog's water! No matter where he is or what he is doing, if he catches a glimpse of that silver bowl he bee-lines it over there. He'll even be in the kitchen or the bedroom and if he hears the dogs slappin away at it, it's all he can focus on. Deo and I try to be really consistent as telling him "no" and "leave it" and then redirecting his attention. But it is definitely tiresome, especially now that he cruises pretty quickly! Mostly, he just looks at us, gives us a devilish grin, and continues on his journey. But we're hanging in there. I'm trying to learn how to get a stern and direct tone without yelling. Last Friday night, I got some videos of our "lessons."
I call this one Caught in the Act
This is one is Listening, but I don't know if playing with the lamp cord is any better
I call this one, Laughing, Playing...Dog Water
Later that evening after dinner and bath, Trey was getting anxious to see his Daddy after being gone all week for work. I thought it was cute how he was trying to mimic my tone! Now if I can only get him to say MA-MA!

They're Creepy and They're Kooky....
I had such a good Halloween this year. I guess anything beats hosting a Halloween bash at our house while being 5 months pregnant! But it really was so much fun. First, we headed up to Casa Grande to do some family time with the kids. We dressed up as the Addams Family. I was so excited about this since Trey is the perfect age to pull of little baby Addams from the Addams Family Values (Pubert is his real name). We had a hard time finding something that would work. In the movie, Pubert wore a little grey pajama set with a spider on the lapel. So I don't think he ever quite wore a suit in the movie, but people definitely figured out who he was.
Alexis was a Clown Ringmaster, which her grandma made the costume (so cute), and little Malorie was a kitten.
Trey did really well during the Trick-or-Treating. We had him the stroller and walked him up to doors with his nieces to get the "experience" of it. I was worried he would be scared of Deo and I all dressed up, but he didn't seem to mind at all. And I have to say, Casa Grande did a pretty good job. Some houses were decorated so cool! We even go some photos with some of the lawn decorations.
Afterwards, we headed back down to Tucson to go to our "joint" Halloween party with my friend, Marisa...or should I say Zombie Cheerleader. But don't mess with this Cheerleader; she was a fighter and didn't succumb to the zombies too easily (that was her back story as she says all good zombie costumes need a back story, and he costume was good!). It was our first night away from the baby and he did so well. He stayed with his Auntie Monica and she said he didn't cry at all and slept all through night (which doesn't even happen at home). It ended up being quite a small party but I had soo much fun! It even ended up some pumpkin smashing (which I always wanted to do, contained of course). Thanks for letting us use your house, Marisa :)

Buckelew Bugaboo
Friday, Deo and Trey met me at work and we walked over to the UA Bookstore to see what kind of good sales they had. Every Friday before a home game, the Bookstore has "Wildcat Fridays" where a bunch of clothing is discounted. I got a cute be-dazzled Arizona shirt and Deo got a UA straw hat...no joke, you'll see it later. Then we headed down University Blvd. to watch the Pride of Arizona march down the street. We finished off the evening with some dee-lish pizza from No Anchovies. Saturday morning we took Trey to his first movie, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs in 3D. He slept through the first hour of the movie and woke up kind of freaked out, wondering why Mommy and Daddy were wearing these huge, black goggles. After the movie we went to the Arizona football game, ate some hot dogs and super nachos, and beat UCLA. The weekend rounded with some Steeler football Sunday morning and Buckelew Farms after. Such a packed weekend but had so much fun!

And in this corner, weighing in at 19 pounds and 10 ounces, Trey Diaz
For Trey's 6 month birthday, we did what every baby wants to do...PICTURES! But no seriously...my baby loves them. He is such a little cheese for the camera. It's like he's got a radar that tells him someone has a camera and I need to have the biggest smile ever for it. We had our friend Nando take the pictures at Reid Park. Adam and Julie brought Ella and Cole for pictures too. We tried to get some of them all together, and each individually. I'm anxiously waiting to see them as I think we got some really good ones! I'll be sure to post when they're ready. In the mean time..here are some prime examples of my little cheese:
Dear Sleep, Where Have You Gone? Love, Sarah
Trey got his first tooth! It finally broke. It's a bottom one and it looks so cute when he gaps his mouth open to laugh. As I mentioned prior, we hit a turning point with food. He wasn't too fond of it at first, but I kept trying and now he's a little eating champ. He LOVES peaches, but will pretty much eat any other fruit; grapes, strawberries, apples, pears. I've been force feeding vegetables which he hated at first. I'm glad I did because now he loves carrots and sweet potatoes. Still not to fond of any green veggie...NOT like his mama. But we're still trying. He also sits up on his own and can scoot forward by pushing his little toes into the floor. He's getting so big now and is such a little boy. Yesterday he came from the sitters and his socks were filthy dirty. I don't know how a 6 month old gets his socks that dirty? Definitely his fathers' son!

1 year ago this month Deo and I just started announcing to everyone we were pregnant. I was in my first trimester at just about 12 weeks. At that point in my life, I had no idea was I was getting myself into. It's only been 6 months, but what a ride it's been. It sounds cliche, but I never knew I could love someone so much. Seeing part of both me and Deo in Trey; it's just simply amazing. My life has changed tremendously in the past year, and not just with the arrival Trey. I've had people enter, I've had people leave; some relationships have blossomed, while others have been strained. I've loved and lost. I've cried and laughed. I've taken a million pictures. I've experienced a million emotions. With all that's said and done, Deo and I started our very own family to love and grow with together. I am one lucky lady.
Here's just a few reasons why I'm so lucky:

Bore of a Training
Yesterday, I had to attend a 3.5 hour training on an alumni/donor software that the University uses. I see this reoccurring theme in my life in which I attend a workshop, or training session, or class, and leave more frustrated than ever; it happened with the breastfeeding class and the hospital tour. Now that my work schedule is so extremely tight, I get frustrated at every wasted minute of my day. I had to wake up at 6:00am to get to work in time in order to walk cross campus to this training. Hence why I was so frustrated that we didn't even start getting into the real meat of the training until 45 minutes into the workshop. We had to go around the room and introduce ourselves and talk about how we will be using the program. I mean, really? I could care less how anyone else is using the program, I know how I needed to use it so let's get on with it. Then the "trainer" proceeded to give her background on how she believed her career in fund raising started when she was 6 years old when she trick-or-treated for UNICEF. I use the word trainer in quotations marks because supposedly she has been leading the training session for 2 years but couldn't get the projector to set up correctly (meaning she didn't know how to make the picture larger) or how to log in to the system. Her excuse was that she normally does the training sessions on Thursdays so the fact that it was a Tuesday was throwing her off.
As I sat there, passively taking in all the information, I started jotting down some things the trainer was saying. You know, real important stuff that I didn't want to forget. Here is my list of real things that are very important to know when using the program.
1. If you don't know what your campaign is, you will need to figure that out.
2. Scroll down until you find the "View Samples" link. DO NOT click on it.
3. Don't let indoor cats outside.
4. In order to open a constituent, please click on "Open a Constituent."
It definitely took 3.5 hours to get this information across!

And the Mommy Guilt Begins
Deo and I finally calm Trey down enough to walk Ella home. The entire walk, the guilt is starting to set in. He's not really moving his arm but he's not really crying anymore either. We finally decided (after hours of trying to decide) to wait until the morning to see how Trey was feeling and to take him to the pediatrician. After a wakeful night, and awaking to a crying baby, we headed out the peds. The doctor felt around, poked and prodded, and then said the words a mother never wants hear, "I think his collar bone is broken." The second the words came from his mouth, tears flooded from my eyes. Not only was my baby hurt, it was all my fault. I coudln't help but thinking what kind of long term damage I may have caused. Next stop, Radiology Ltd. to get some baby X-rays. Verdict, Trey's collar bone is broken. Unfortunately, and fortunately, there is not too much that can be done. Waiting and watching, and in 4 weeks some more X-rays to make sure it is healing correctly.
My poor little baby is not even 6 months old and already has his first broken bone. He's doing a lot better with the help of Tylenol and Ibuprofen, but you can definitely tell he is still hurting. With Trey being 19 lbs, many people comment how he's going to be a linebacker when he grows up. But I didn't think I'd have to get used to him getting hurt like a linebacker just yet!!

To Grandmother's House We Go
On a side note; I brought my computer with me down to Bowie as it's pretty busy at work right now and I need to get stuff done. Although it's only about an hour drive from Tucson, Deo let me use his wireless card so I can access the internet and work while on the road. As we're driving through the barren landscape, it's hard to imagine how crazy technology has come that I actually blog while weaving through the desert.

Last Vacation of the Summer
The conference was located at the Boca Raton Resort and Club and we stayed at the Boca Beach Club off the main hotel. The Beach Club is a little more family friendly and Deo's boss recommended staying there rather than the more uptight main hotel. First of all, I have never stayed a place like this ever. At first I felt very out of place. It's a very fancy-shmancy resort and Deo and I are not that kind of fancy-shmancy people. It was fun to pretend and rub elbows with other moms at the pool (and their nannies that most likely spoke very little English). There was lots of old, balding men with their 18 year old, exercise instructor "wives" with big, fake boobs. Oh and not to mention the cheapest thing on the menu was a $17 Burger that with all the service charges, taxes and fees came to about $33 dollars! Since Trey is still so young, we didn't do much of anything. We hung out in the room most of they day, making it to the beach or the pool for only about an hour a day. Deo had to work pretty much the entire time, but he got a few nights off where we ate at a really yummy Italian restaurant and Morimoto's (a fabulous sushi bar owned by Iron Chef Morimoto). I had had had to eat there since Deo and I love Iron Chef America and I gotta say, it was delicious sushi!
The last night, Deo's company rented out the entire pool and deck area of the club and had dinner for everyone. Families were welcome to attend so Trey and I got to meet and mingle with Deo's co-workers. Trey, of course, was the hit of the dinner and Deo's National Sales Manager even snagged him for a bit and was taking him around showing him off. She even took a picture with him with her cell phone which I thought was so funny. If Trey didn't realize he was cute before, he definitely knows it now after this trip.
Overall, I had a very relaxing time and now that I know what to expect, I think next time could be even better. As Trey gets older I think he will love playing in the pool and the beach all day so hopefully we'll get the chance to go again.
Ewww
As I'm exiting the bathroom stall, I see a teenage girl standing outside a stall holding two ice cream cones. She is licking both of them as the ice cream melts down the cone. First of all...gross! Eating in a bathroom, let alone an airport bathroom, sickens me. If this isn't gross enough. Her mom comes out of the stall, the daughter hands off the two cones to her mom (without washing her hands mind you) and the daughter goes into the stall. Then the mom stands outside of the stall and begins licking the cones. EWW EWW EWW. I think I just stood there and stared for like 5 minutes in disbelief.

Record-Keeping
July 11, 2009: TREY SAID HIS FIRST WORD, "MA MA." I was up in Phoenix at my Aunt Lauri's house for the day. I was up in her room nursing Trey while she was putting clothes away. He was being a little fussy and in the midst of his gurgles and coos he distinctly cried, "MA MA." My and aunt and I looked at each other in disbelief wondering if the other one had heard it too. Even though he may not exactly know what he was saying, it was definitively "Ma Ma." I called Deo and of course he didn't believe me. The next day, some of Deo's family was over and I was telling them the story and they are all looking at me like I'm crazy. I left to drop some things off at my brother's house and when I returned they all were excited as they said Trey said "Ma Ma" again. They said he was fussing around and cried it out, similarly to how he did it with me. Even though Deo doesn't think he knows what he is saying (I think he totally knows), he did say it was clearly "Ma Ma" coming from his mouth!!!!
July 11, 2009: THE FIRST TIME I SAW TREY ROLL OVER. Even though Deo said Trey's been rolling over since the beginning of the month, I had yet to actually see him do it. It was while I was up in Phoenix as my aunt's and Trey was laying on the floor. We were all prepping dinner and all of a sudden, my aunt looked over and saw Trey on his belly. We rushed over there and he totally was hanging out, peering around on his little belly. A couple minutes later he rolled right back over to his back. I was glad I finally got to see him do it!

Tres Months
I can't believe my little boy is 3 months old already! A couple weeks ago, when Trey actually turned 3 months, our amazing friend, Nando, came over and held a photo shoot with our bundle of joy. Trey started off a little fussy and not wanting to get into any of the pre-selected positions I had wanted. However, I think he started to get into it after awhile, even if it was for only a few short minutes. Nando ended up getting some really great shots.
Some things I hope to remember from this age are:- the way he sticks his little tongue out from his adorable, gummy smile
- the way his eyes widen like silver dollars when I turn on a bright light
- how he talks to his lion, monkey, and hippo friends on his bouncer in the morning
- his rolling laughter when I give him fishy-kisses, butterfly kisses, Eskimo kisses, European kisses, Trey kisses, Mommy kisses, Daddy kisses, Toby kisses...and any other kisses I can think of
- how he is so, so close to rolling over and how excited I get when I think "this will be the time"
- they way he looks like a little bird when he lifts his head off the floor during tummy time
I love that my little guy will still cuddle with me and will cry just becuase he wants me to hold him. And how holding him really does comfort him and make him happy. I try to remember this most of all as I hear this stage goes by quicker than any mom expects. For now, I'm still the only woman in his life.

I love his different facial expressions; how he can be so thoughtful and inquisitive. Everyday it seems as if he recognizes something new. I do my best to read to him everyday. Right now, he seems to enjoy a touch-and-feel book I recently picked up, but is now starting to want to taste-and-eat his books as well.

I love how he looks at me when I go to get him from his crib in morning. Did I mention that I love that he sleeps in his own crib and through the night? I LOVE that! Even though I get sad that this very fact is really testing me at allowing him his independence...and it's harder than I could ever imagine. All of those "you'll understand when you have kids" speeches I heard as a child all make perfect sense to me now.
